FLORENCE, SOUTH CAROLINA, February 4, 2008 – Two top honors were awarded from two of the states golfing authorities to the Country Club of South Carolina, the site of the 2007 SCGA Amateur Championship. The course was named 2007 Club of the Year by the South Carolina Golf Association and was chosen from more than 375 golf courses in the state to be one of the top 25 best courses as deemed by the South Carolina Golf Course Ratings Panel.
“We are honored to be recognized by two such esteemed organizations and truly believe our club is worthy of these designations,” said Jonathan Burnett, Vice President of Golf Operations at the Country Club of South Carolina. “This course is a uniquely perfect combination of challenge, beauty and playability.”
The Country Club of South Carolina features an Ellis Maples designed, 18-hole, 7,150 yard championship course. It was the former host of the Nike (Buy.com) South Carolina Classic on the PGA Tour and has also opened its doors to tournaments including The Men’s Southern Conference Golf Championship, The Carolina Women’s Golf Association Championship and the SCGA Junior Championship. The Country Club also offers its members amenities including swimming, tennis and world-class dining and banquet facilities. It will celebrate its 40th anniversary next year.
“We’ve watched the Country Club of South Carolina grow over the years while it hosted many of our championship events and it just hit a peak this year.” said Happ Lathrop, Executive Director of the South Carolina Golf Association. “Overall the club has a very professional staff and great membership supporting its course and amenities.”
Each year the South Carolina Golf Association chooses a Club of the Year based on factors such as condition, membership, history and reputation. The association has offered computerized handicapping services to South Carolina golf courses since 1970 and is primarily responsible for enabling the qualification of juniors, seniors and amateurs of varying levels into tournament play. It also oversees the South Carolina Golf Hall of Fame and the South Carolina Junior Golf Foundation, which has awarded more than $550,000 in scholarships since 1995.
The Country Club of South Carolina was also a welcome addition to the “25 Best Courses You Can Play” by the South Carolina Golf Course Ratings Panel. The panel consists of 125 members who choose courses for the list based on best course design, distinctiveness, aesthetics, course management and overall club experience.
